@letsencrypt offers certificates to encrypt the traffic between a website & your browser.
They reside in the US & thus are subject to the judiciary system of the US.
What are the possible risks for websites outside the US, given the current unstable political situation & administration? What type of damage could an executive order do? How could this be mitigated?

Setting up a non-US based LE CA replacement, considering the amount of certificates they deal with on a daily basis, seems quite a daunting task?
Certificates have probably been added to hardware devices as well, replacing a CA in those would be a challenge. Same for the amount of services depending on this CA.
Looking into alternatives, it seems that Norway already has a LE compatible service established:

If they turn out to be the go-to solution, the challenge would be for them to scale their service drastically - but again, likely a matter of days or even hours.
Not sure if a lot of devices rely on LE as they would need to renew their certificate every 90 days - which most of them don't. But yea, it would be chaos for a little while.

Related advice for the #ECI portal: Downloading and storing the signature PDFs with _the ID and/or title_ of that initiative somewhere.

It's easy to forget whether one has already signed an ECI during the months that it's open. Duplicate signature likely aren't simply duplicated, but totally invalidated.
So, before signature, I check whether I check whether I got a PDF of it already.

Hey everyone,
I’m micr0, the person behind Altbot, the open-source bot that helps generate alt-text for images, videos, and audio on the Fediverse. Right now, Altbot uses Google Gemini to generate the alt-text, but that means your data goes through Google’s servers and could be used for training their machine learning models.
To fix this and ensure total privacy, I’m looking to move Altbot to a local model that will run completely on my own hardware. This way, your data won’t be saved, shared, or used anywhere else—it’ll stay private and only temporarily be on my hardware.
It’s a big goal, but one that’s been on my mind since the very beginning. I’ve been talking about this shift for a while, and it’s time to make it happen. Plus, if I reach the goal, Altbot will be running on 48% renewable energy, which means less environmental impact and more sustainability.
To make this happen, I need to raise $1,800–$2,000 USD to buy server-grade hardware—things like GPUs for model processing, a solid motherboard, power supply, storage, and cooling. With this setup, I’ll be able to run Altbot privately, efficiently, and sustainably.

🗣️ Die Pragschule setzt als eine von etwa 200 Standorten im Land schon in diesem Schuljahr das #Sprachförderpaket der Landesregierung um. Aus 3 Kitas kommen Kinder ein Jahr vor Schulbeginn für vier Sprachförderstunden 2 x pro Woche an die Pragschule, um besser Deutsch zu lernen.
👥 Eine Besonderheit an dieser Grundschule ist der „Pragschulrat“. In dem Gremium entscheiden Schülerinnen und Schüler demokratisch darüber, wie z. B. die Turnhalle belegt wird oder wie die Spielgeräte in den Pausen ausgeliehen werden können. Die Lehrkräfte stehen nur beratend zur Seite.

Recently, Altbot has been targeted by DDoS attacks. While the motive is unclear, it seems tied to a misguided belief that the bot’s alt-text generation is harmful to the environment. Let me set the record straight.
Altbot uses Gemini-1.5-flash, a specifically low-power AI model. Processing a single alt-text request consumes around 0.0005 kWh, meaning that in the 4 months since I created Altbot—and tens of thousands of alt-text entries generated—it has consumed roughly 10 kWh in total. That’s about the same energy as running a single LED light bulb nonstop for 41 days or driving an electric car just 40 miles.
These DDoS attacks, however, have already consumed more electricity and computing power than Altbot has across its entire existence... in a matter of hours. This means the attacks have caused more environmental harm than the very thing they seem to be protesting.
Altbot exists to improve accessibility on Mastodon, not to harm the environment. Accessibility and sustainability can coexist, and I’m committed to keeping Altbot energy-efficient and purposeful.
If there are concerns, I encourage constructive dialogue—not destructive actions that undermine both inclusivity and sustainability.

Auch wenn es schon lange her ist, bleibt sowas bei mir irgendwie hängen. Ist ein Haufen sensibler Daten, die da beherbergt werden und Eltern haben idR keine Gelegenheit und Möglichkeit zur Ablehnung oder Anonymisierung. So wie ich es kenne, richten Schulen einfach ohne Zustimmung Accounts mit personenbezogenen Daten der Kinder ein.
Ansonsten ist die App gut gemacht.
